For our Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructures in Bremerhaven, we wish to recruit a qualified
Head of the Department of Resilience of Maritime Systems
Your mission:
The Department of Resilience of Maritime Systems develops analysis methods and assessment criteria that enable the measurement and description of the achieved degree of resilience in complex systems. The findings are used to create new security concepts that enable a technological and systematic organisation of infrastructure according to the principle of resilience-by-design. System optimisation during the design phase is based on the integral appreciation of complementary security objectives in the areas of simple operational safety, advanced operational safety and protection from attack. In this regard, factors such as economic efficiency, legal implementation and the societal acceptance of planned measures must be considered.
You will be responsible for developing and leading the Resilience of Maritime System Department. Among others, your duties are as follows:
- independent identification of research requirements in close coordination with the Institute’s management and the Head of the Maritime Security Technologies department
- technical planning and specification of research undertakings
- coordination of planned R&D activities with the competent DLR institutes within the DLR Maritime Security Research Association
- preparation and control of the annual business plan on a departmental level
- independent staff recruitment, as well as technical and disciplinary staff management
- establishment and strengthening of external client contact (including to ministries and government agencies entrusted with security mandates, industrial partners etc.) and to clients within DLR
- representation of the department and the Institute on national and international expert panels
Your qualifications:
- university graduate (university diploma or master’s degree) in electrical or transport engineering, an equivalent engineering discipline or of physics; postgraduate studies in the area of mathematics is preferred
- PhD in one of the areas mentioned above
- several years of professional experience as a system engineer with proven expertise in systems analysis and/or systems design
- professional experience preferred in the generation of security studies and analyses, the definition of security-related performance indicators, as well as the security assessment and optimisation of complex systems according to the principle of resilience-by-design method
- experience in the acquisition and management of projects with third-party funding
- management experience, confirmed by several years in a position as team leader
- experience in dealing partners in industry, project partners and principals in consortium projects
- experience teaching at a university or institute of higher education is preferred
- excellent command of English, both written and spoken
- outstanding communication skills and a cooperative manner, ability to work in a team, a persuasive style, assertiveness and excellent poise
- willingness to undergo advanced security clearance (Ü2), equivalent to NATO/EU SECRET
