The Hamburg Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory is in charge of four experimental stations on the PETRA III synchrotron, one of the world brightest X-rays sources run by DESY in Hamburg (https://www.embl-hamburg.de/services). These experimental stations operate 24/7 and are used by hundreds of international users every year for addressing their research questions in Structural Biology. Mechanics with precisions in the µm and nm range are needed for conditioning and controlling X-ray beams and for handling small and fragile biological samples. Many components operate under cryogenic and/or UHV conditions. Your role You will participate in the construction, installation and commissioning of synchrotron beamline instruments, prototypes, and entire experimental setups. Tasks will include developing innovative ideas for experimental challenges, installation and characterization of prototypes, iterative improvements and troubleshooting, leading potentially to commercializable products. You will be involved in the beamline instrument development for the next generation synchrotron PETRA IV. You will work in an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists. You will support scientists in finding technical solutions for complex experimental problems and you will support user operation at the beamlines. You have A master degree (or equivalent) in precision mechanical engineering, physics engineering, or mechatronics Demonstrated experience in technical drawing with 3D CAD systems like Solid Edge or equivalent packages and expert FEA knowledge in particular about thermal and vibration problems preferably using ANSYS Knowledge about precision-positioning technology is important.
