The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre and the space agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. Here, 8000 employees work together on a unique variety of topics in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, digitalisation and security. Their missions range from basic research to the development of innovative applications and products for tomorrow. Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels, who fully achieve their potential in an inspiring environment. Launch your mission with us.
For our Institute of Data Science in Jena we want to recruit a
The thematic focus of the recently founded DLR Institute of Data Science in Jena is on management, analysis and processing of big and heterogeneous data, IT-security, smart systems (Industry 4.0) and Citizen Science.
The Citizen Science Research Group develops foundational concepts, methods and applications for Citizen Science projects. Besides the question of how citizens and scientists can be engaged in joint projects and work together, data science aspects of Citizen Science are core research items. The research group develops modern methods that facilitate data collection by citizen scientists and enable the standardized and machine-readable provision of such data as well as techniques for the scientific analysis of data collected or provided by citizens in combination with data from other sources. For this purpose, methods and algorithms are developed that enable the efficient evaluation of large amounts of data from various sources. This includes a multitude of different data, which are recorded both, systematically and continuously or in an ad hoc manner. Examples include Volunteered Geographic Information and temporally highly dynamical data from social media. The tasks include research and development work in the areas of data management, data collection and data processing as well as data analysis and data fusion.
Research and development is conducted in close cooperation with the other working groups at the institute, the cooperation partners at the universities in Jena and Weimar and other DLR institutes. In the application area of Remote Sensing there will be close collaborations with the German Remote Sensing Data Center of the DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich.
Your main task will be research and development in the area of Citizen Science.
The emphasis of your activities will be on:

- developing (IT-based) techniques for the standardized provision and analysis of citizen contributions
- developing a concept for the outlined research topic in the field of Citizen Science
- designing and conducting research and development work in a self-reliant way
- establishing national and international collaborations
- acquiring and managing research and development projects
- contributing to the conception and implementation of Citizen Science projects
- representing the research area at conferences and in national and international committees
- publishing research results in scientific journals
- professionally supervising doctoral candidates and students
- creating documentations, software and scientific publications
The special focus of this position is on the topic of motivating and enabling participation of volunteers. At the core is the exploitation of new forms of citizen participation in scientific processes and the development of innovative (IT-) methods that support this. As part of our research team you help to shape the scientific agenda of the group in the outlined research area.
