Start your mission with DLR.
The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is the national aeronautics and space research centre and the space agency of the Federal Republic of Germany. Here, 8000 employees work together on a unique variety of topics in the fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport, digitalisation and security. Their missions range from basic research to the development of innovative applications and products for tomorrow. Cutting-edge research requires excellent minds – particularly more females – at all levels, who fully achieve their potential in an inspiring environment. Launch your mission with us.
For our Institute of Solar Research in Jülich we are looking for a
UAV based infrared thermography
Your mission:
Reduction in CO2 emission is the hot topic in current global situation. The heating energy used for buildings is the second largest share of the overall energy consumption in Germany. The primary causes are inefficient building envelopes. In order to identify the poorly insulated building envelopes we are developing a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) based infrared thermographic system.
An infrared camera mounted on a UAV captures the thermal images to calculate the heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of the building envelope. Many factors influence the measurement which may lead to a large error in the U-value. This internship will mainly contribute to obtain a better understanding of the infrared thermographic measurements by carrying out experiments at our test facility in Jülich. The data analysis will be used to reduce the measurement errors and develop a method to determine U-values using infrared thermography. It is an excellent opportunity to work in a cutting edge topic, gain experience on real optical hardware, and improve your measurement and data analysis skills.
Your tasks:
- performing experiments at a test facility in Jülich using infrared cameras
- possibility to take part in UAV based measurement campaign
- measurement of heat transfer coefficient (U-value) of walls
- data analysis using Python
Your qualifications:
- student in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Energy Technology, Optics, Physics or similar study program
- compulsory internship in your study program
- interest in learning new things is desired
- fluent knowledge of English and good knowledge of German language
- basic knowledge of infrared thermography is beneficial
- independent working abilities
- knowledge in Python is a plus
Your benefits:
Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy puts great value on a healthy work-life balance as well as equal opportunities for men and women. Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
